I cant keep up with who actually got a what and to whom is shopping which now. If you bought a car recently (the last 18 months), show me. If you are emotionally available to buying a car in the next 18 months and are UCS , show me!

Yes, you may post a seemingly random list of 40 cars. Just skip the pictures, or better yet... show me!

Currently in the process of looking for a beater. Details will drop if I make the incredibly questionable life choice I am poised to make.

I’ve posted probably too much about it, but here’s my new-to-me, older-than-me Mk3. See username for how it’s going- in two months, I’ve done an O2 sensor to pass e-check, replaced both axles, new CAI filter, and paid someone else to change the oil, align it, and give it new tires all around. I need to do timing belt/water pump, distributor, fuel pump, and fuel filter, but... I won’t, at least any time soon. I also swapped the grille for a debadged one because it looks cool.

I bought this exactly one year and two days ago:

https://oppositelock.kinja.com/so-i-bought-a-thing-1797565489

My current unnecessary want is a 1973-1987 Chevy/GMC crew cab square body and drop the body onto a 1999 or newer 2500HD running gear. Like I want to cut out the firewall and can floor and swap them so I get the whole interior. I have been looking for fairly solid square bodies and wrecked 2500HD’s.

Really don't care if the truck is gas or diesel. Prefer gas because I want to experiment with turbo.

Very much so. It’s a blast to drive, handles better than anything that big an d high off of the ground has any right to, is reasonably quick, sounds great with the mufflers cut off (or the single round Magnaflow I used to tone it down a smidge)... Comfortable and well appointed assuming you buy one with the tech package, which you absolutely 100% should opt for, and it looks very sharp to my eye.

Also, it’s been bar none the most reliable vehicle I’ve owned in decades. Thus far all it’s needed are gas and oil changes, though I may do a cursory refresh of the various bushings just to bring it back to as close to new as I can get it.

I will say though, when Nissan released it they were swinging for the fences when it came to performance numbers. As such the 2003 (maybe ‘ 04 an d early ‘ 05 too) ride significantly firmer than the facelifted ones . On mine, you feel those road imperfections, but it all comes together when it really counts. The newer ones were made softer to appease complaints of it being too firm, and as such the handling numbers took a bit of a hit. Satisfactory either way though, I’d imagine.

Aside from that, they do have a few common issues. The door lock actuators will all eventually fail, and commonly stop working properly when the weather gets warm. Couple hundred each, though lots of people retrofit with cheap ebay actuators. 3 of my doors tend to act up when it’s hot, so I will have to address them eventually. Also, the leather is thin and the drivers seat bolsters tend to crack. Couple hundred at an upholstery shop should do the trick, but I forget all about it once my butt hits the seat.

I’d buy it  again tomorrow if I had to. Maybe in that burnt orange color, but it looks great in black as well... And silver, for that matter...

Just based straight on the driving experience? A number of those cars got crossed off the list for reasons other than driving dynamics - things like the price and rear seat room, primarily. But just *roughly* in order of driving experience:

981 Boxster S (manual) - this was super easy. Probably the best car I’ve ever driven.

997 Cabriolet (manual) - heavy clutch and odd pedal placement put it behind the Boxster, otherwise I might have put this car on top .

ND Miata (manual) - it’s a Miata, what can I say? Quicker than I expected, too.

Chevy SS (2016) - wonderful engine and suspension, this was the runner up to the E550. Sounds great, too.

MB E550 - not a great handler by any yardstick, but super comfortable, and god that engine has all of the torque, from about 900 rpm up. Pulls like a turbo diesel truck engine.

BMW 340i (manual) - nice car, good engine, not really great at anything.

MB E63 AMG (2013) - the one I drove had quite a few miles on it, and seemed a touch tired - but still broke the rear tires loose from 30 mph. Maybe if I could afford a CPO AWD car.

BMW M4 (manual 2016) ) - the 340i had enough power, this was quicker but the ride was stiff - and I suspect the engine is better suited to the autobox.

MB E300 - loved the chassis, but not enough power/too expensive.

Kia Stinger GT2 - great drivetrain, interior materials a little below most of this list (it’s also cheaper, too, so I can’t fault Kia). Fun to drive, and I smashed my skull on the roof trying to get in the back seat, which killed any interest I had.

Jaguar XF - the one I drove was a fairly loaded car, with a supercharged V6. Brilliant engine, hard seats, and kinda tight in back. And it stickered for $73k. Too much.

Honda Accord Sport - a damn good car, with the 2.0T and an automatic. If I was shopping new in this price range, I’d get a 2.0T / manual.

Alfa Romeo Giulia - I liked driving it, great steering and engine, but needs to be in sport mode, otherwise it upshifts way too quickly. Cheap interior materials in the one I drove.

Genesis G80 Sport - the car just weighs at least 500 lb too much and is too numb. Quite luxurious, and tons of features for the price. If you like quiet comfort, this is a great choice.

Audi S5 Sportback - great drivetrain, meh chassis. Too nose heavy.

I think I covered them all - ask me again in an hour, and I’ll rank some of them differently (especially those in the middle quartiles) . Even the bottom car on the list is a very nice car - and has a really smooth 350 HP engine.

Difficult to believe, but the Exocet is nearing its 1 year anniversary:

Kinja'd!!!

As much fun as I’ve been having with it, my long-running Miata + Outback garage combo (going on 10 and 6 years in my possession respectively) has become unbalanced. The fun factor of the former has been usurped and the later won’t be able to handle my plans to eventually tow the Exocet. Needless to say, UCS to eventually refocus the fleet is underway.

Phase 1 is to sell the Miata and Outback to help purchase some manner of hot hatch sometime next year. The Golf R looks to be the current front-runner here unless something substantial changes in the 2019 MY or something pops up on the horizon for 2020 that is worth waiting for. The combo of AWD, comfort, and a moderately spicy drivetrain should do a pretty good job of keeping things at least somewhat interesting while covering all of my practicality needs. It also helps that VW has a nice long bumper-to-bumper warranty now and the Exocet will always be available if I find myself wanting for more fun. That said, I still can’t entirely rule out the CTR, FoRS, STI, etc. No matter which way I go, I’m really not looking forward to the nigh-inevitable struggles to get out on a test drive or negotiate a not-marked-up price for anything in this segment...

Kinja'd!!!

Phase 2 is to acquire some manner of tow-capable vehicle once I feel comfortable enough with the Exocet to start racing it outside the general KC area. I could see myself aiming for a newer midsize truck since the demands aren’t super high (enclosed trailer with *maybe* 2000 lbs of car + equipment) and it’s something I probably wouldn’t hate driving otherwise (unlike most larger vehicles), but there’s also an argument to be made for saving some coin and going for an older, larger, proven workhorse. Needless to say I have some more research to do, and will just have to see what my wallet looks like when the time arrives.
